Abstract With the growth of film cultural industry, the importance of film subtitle translation becomes increasingly clear. Communication is becoming more popular among different language films. Recent years have seen more and more attention paid to the field of subtitle translation by translation researchers and translators. On the basis of predecessors’ research, the author of this thesis attempts to adopt the functionalist theory of German school to analyze the subtitle translation, which is left undone in previous studies. Under the guidance of German Functionalist Theory, functionalist approaches to translation in general and particular are compared in the thesis. The author analyzes language features of the film Kung Fu Panda in details. Then discusses subtitle translation of Kung Fu Panda as a functional purposeful activity, a functional interpersonal action, a functional intercultural action and a functional text-processing action from the four main parts. Under the framework of the functionalist translation theory, insists on skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, lets the reduction, addition and combining as major functional text-processing action reflect in the film subtitle translation. Combined with the translation strategies, it will be helpful to establish the translation meaning in the source text and target text. As a kind of film translation should be subject to the context. Based on the subtitle translation of Kung Fu Panda, the author attempts to combine the functionalist theory with system linguistics, possibly related to field, tenor and mode.
