Its first two nodes that formed the ARPAnet were UCLA and Stanford Research Institute, thereafter followed shortly by the University of Utah. 3.1.1 The Origin and Development of Internet 2．The First Leap of Internet NSFnet is a wide area network developed under the auspices of the National Science Foundation. NSFnet replaced ARPAnet as the main government network linking universities and research facilities. 3.1.1 The Origin and Development of Internet 2．The First Leap of Internet In 1995, however, the NSF dismantled NSFnet and replaced it with a commercial Internet backbone. the NSF implemented a new backbone called Very-high-speed Backbone Network Service, which serves as a testing ground for the next generation of Internet technologies. 3.1.1 The Origin and Development of Internet 3．The Second Leap of Internet In 1991, US firms began using Internet for commerce, therefore Internet began to develop. Public access started in September 1993 by ATT Jens of the US. Growth took off in mid-1994 with the promotion of commercial Internet applications. 4．The Absolute Commercialization of Internet Commercialization of Internet involved not only the development of competitive, private network services, but also the development of commercial products implementing the Internet technology. In parallel with the commercialization efforts that were highlighted by the Interop activities, the vendors began to attend the IETF meetings that were held 3 or 4 times a year to discuss new ideas for extensions of the TCP/IP suite. 4
