Abstract Content Scrambling System(CSS) is a kind of data encryption and authentication technique which prevent the unauthorized copy of disc contents. In order for data to be unscrambled by the host which can be either a hardware decoder or a software player, the host needs to obtain two keys: disc and title keys from DVD disc. During these two keys being transferred by DVD drive to the host, they could be stolen and duplicated illegally. To assure the security of data transfer channel, CSS set up an authentication mechanism to use the bus key to scramble the disc and title keys before they are passed to the host. The design and implementation of CSS is investigated in this thesis, which is used in the DVD-ROM servo controller. Its main functions are following: 1) It completes the authentication process between DVD drive and host decoder; 2) It scramble s and transfers the disc and title keys . It is fully compatible with the CSS specification that is issued by Copy Protection Technology Working Group. This thesis also gives the system architecture of CSS and illustrates the design of various sub-modules based on the analysis of its principle and algorithm. Then the system is implemented using VerilogHDL and at last its functionality is verified using VCS simulator and FPGA prototype. Following are the main work and new ideas: 1) Study the CSS specification; Analysis of the CSS function or algorithm; Definition of CSS system architecture and organization; Design and verification of all the functional units; Whole system verification and implementation result analysis.
