Laboratory Activity 7: Normal and Tension forces Group member names: -andy whitten -clay ellis -chris ray Objectives Explore how the nature of contact forces. Develop a qualitative model for normal forces and tension forces. Learn about proportional and inversely proportional graphs. Equipment Embroidery hoops with different material. Clay ball 50 g and 100 g masses Hard rubber object Two spring scales Long and short string Rubber band Wire Activity One: Normal force By now you know that if there is a net force on an object, it will accelerate. You also have come to realize that the earth exerts a gravitational force on all objects. However, a book sitting on a table does not move, so it has no acceleration. Question 1: What must be happening between the book and the table so that the book does not move even though there is a gravitational force on it? Book is exerting a force on the table and vise versa. Experiment 1: Get an embroidery hoop with stretchy cloth. Press a finger in the middle of the cloth, both easy and a little harder. Rotate the hoop to several different directions, pressing your finger in it, observing how it responds and the force on your finger. Place a 50 g on it and notice how far it is stretched, then 100 g, then 150 g. Take turns in your group. Question 2a: Write down your observations. When you press on the cloth, what do you see and what do you feel? What happens when you press harder? How does the direction of force the cloth exerts on your finger depend on the orientation of the hoop? It goes down farther the harder you push. The closer to the edges the higher the force of the hoop. Question 2b: What happens when you remove your finger? Why do you think the cloth behaves this way, instead of the way putty or play-dough remains deformed after being pressed? It springs back to original shape. Because it is elastic Experiment 2: Get the hoop with the stiffer cloth and repeat the experiment you did above, pres
