Abstract
The Pulitzer Prize winning play (also a film) Proof by the American playwright
David Auburn gained much acclaim and multiple awards. The initial reviews focus on
Auburns choice of a mathematical proof and the affirmation of womens ability to
compete in the field of higher mathematics. In China, few researches are found
concerning this play. Therefore, the author of this thesis explores the theme of the play by
doing a close reading of Auburns script, trying to evoke more researches on the play
Proof, especially in China.
Under the guidance of feminist theory including role theory and expectation states
theory, this thesis attempts to explore the predicament of women represented in David
Auburn’s Play Proof, especially the heroines gender role, performance expectations and
identity. The study is based on the analysis of the heroine, Catherine’s interactions with
other characters in the play, both male and female characters. It is to state that on its
surface, Proof deceptively claims to challenge perceptions of women as incapable of
authority in fields that have been traditionally dominated by men; however, the author of
this thesis argues that the familiar affirmation of patriarchal hegemony lurks beneath the
surface. Though the mathematic theory is proved in the play, the
proof of the status and
competence of women is far from perfection. In the contemporary era the play is set,
women’s trapped situation in patriarchal societies, especially in the academic field, is still
noteworthy.
