* * LECTURE 6: EVENT TOURISM MNG00421: Events Management EVENT TOURISM Former Premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie (2001, p. 2062) claimed that “events lead to tourism booms and that leads to jobs …”. Tourism destination managers and governments are increasingly looking at event tourism as an important mechanism for enhancing tourism to facilitate regional growth and development (Fredline, Jago Deery, 2003) Event tourism needs to be a co-ordinated approach to achieve a destinations event tourism strategy., WHAT IS EVENT TOURISM Event tourism is: The systematic development, planning, marketing and holding and marketing of events as tourist attractions’ (Getz ,1991; 1997) Event tourism is generally recognized as being inclusive of all planned events in an integrated approach to development and marketing” (Getz, 2008, p. 405) “Event tourists are those people who visit a destination for the primary purpose of participating in or viewing an event.” (Turco, Riley Swart, 2002). EVENT TOURISM The goals of event tourism include: Creating a favourable image for a destination Expanding the traditional tourist season Spreading tourist demand more evenly through an area Attracting foreign and domestic visitors Economic benefit Infrastructure development HOW DO EVENTS FACILITATE TOURISM Events provide an opportunity for a destination to secure a higher profile for a short well-defined period of time. The media coverage events can generate assist destinations to build confidence and a positive image in the tourism marketplace. The event attracts visitors to the region who otherwise may not have visited Events contribute to destination attractiveness by their: expansion of the tourist season spread of tourism geographically use of resorts, theme parks use of convention and exhibition facilities use of museums and galleries use of markets and shopping areas.
