Shadow play 皮影戏 Origin Mainland China Shadow play or Shadow puppetry （傀儡、木偶） originated during the Han Dynasty when one of the concubines(嫔妃）of Emperor Wu of Han died from an illness. The emperor was very sad, and he summoned（传唤，召集） his court officers to bring his beloved(心爱的人） back to life. The officers made a shape of the concubine using donkey leather（驴皮）.
