Abstract：Thegoalofthisstudyistoprovideinformationontheprocessofpotholegrowthon
agorgestreambed．Potholegeometriesweremeasuredinareachofthe Daburiverbedat
theheadofagorgemorethan200m deeplyincisingintoa650-750m highplanationsurface
formedinthemiddleMioceneinnodhernGuangdong．China．Geometricandderivativedata
ofthepotholesobtainedfr0m fieldworkwere interpreted usingstandardstatisticalmethod-
ologies．Ourstudyshowsthattheformationanddevelopmentofastream potholewereonly
relatedto locaIconditionsofastream reach where the pothole OCCUrs；the weaknesses．
whichareusuallyintersectfractures，typicallyinterconnectedverticaIioints，ortriangularpits
generatedbyhittingofrockfragmentsduringfloods，initiatethepotholedevelopmentona
streambed：thegeometricaldimensionsofthepotholesarecontroIIedbytectoniciointsde—
velopedinbedrockofthestream reach：theradiusandthedepthofpotholesarestrongly(1og)
positivecorrelated；thepotholeshapesandtheflow patternsare inconstantduringpothole
growth：a potholecan beformedwithinashortperiod，butcannotbefullydevelopedand
maintainedfora longtime inastrong incisionstreambed．Thefinding inourstudycan im—
provetheunderstandingofQuaternaryenvironmentinGuangdong．
