Abstract
CohesivesedimentsexhibitcomplexrheologicalbehaviorsthatarcnonNewtonian andtime．dependentwhen
subjectedtoexternalloading．Thispaperpresentstheresultsofaninvestigationontherheologicalpropertiesof
threetypesofdense cohesive sediments．collected from themouth ofthe YangtzeRiver，the shoalofthe
ttangzhouBay，andtheYangchengLakeinChina．A setofrheologicalparameters(includingviscosity，yield
stress，etc．)wasstudiedbasedonexperimentsthatwereconductedwithaRheolabQCrheometer．Measurements
oftheflow curves，shearstress—timeresponses，andyieldstressesweremade．Thesolid—liquidtransitionofthe
densecohesivesedimentsoccurredbothintheshearrateramptestsandtheshearstressramptests．Thistransition
was notdirect．but itwasmediated by a transitional defotination regime or stress plateau．Both the
