Abstract:Mosuldam isthebiggesthydraulicstructureinIraqlocatedontheRiverTigris60km northwestofMosulcity.Itsstorage
capacityisl1.I1×l0 m andithadbeeninoperationsince1986.Aphysicaldistortedmodelwithmovablebedhavingavertica1scale
l:l00andahorizonta1scale1:l000wasusedtoconducttheexperimentsrelatingthewaterlevelatthereservoirandwaterdischarge
upstream thereservoirwiththebedloadtransportrate.Themodelrepresentsthefirst15km ofmostnorthern part ofMOSU1dam
reservoir.Theconsturctionofthemode1wasbasedonbathymetricsurveyconductedin2009.Twenty.fourexperimentswereexecuted
usingfourdifferentdischarges(0.5,1.0,1.5,and2.0L/s)whichrepresenttheaveragedischargesinthefloodperiodofRiverTigris.At
eachindividualdischargesixoperationswereassumedwherethereservoir’swaterlevelwas305,307,309,310,3l2,3l5meters
abovesealevelrespectively.Inalltheexperimentsconducted.bedloadtransportwasmeasuredinthephysicalmodelatsection
representingtheRiverTigris1km ups~eam thereservoir.Theresultsshowedthatthebedloadratewasdecreasingwhenthewater
levelwithinthereservoirwasincreasing.Itwasalsoevidentthatbedloadtransport ratedramaticallydecreasedatlevel310meters
abovesealevelonward.Thisisduetothefactthatatthisleve1representtheeffectofbackwaterwhichwasnoticeableontherivercross
section.
