ABSTRACT A simpliﬁed proof of the basic properties of the estimators in the Ex- ponential Order Statistics (Jelinski-Moranda) Model is given. The method of constructing conﬁdence intervals from hypothesis tests is applied to ﬁnd conservative conﬁdence intervals for the unknown parameters in the model. 1. INTRODUCTION Testing of a software product has revealed 10 bugs. How many more bugs are there in the software? A team of explosives experts has removed 112 landmines from a known mineﬁeld. How many landmines did the team fail to ﬁnd? These questions ﬁt into the general framework of what is called the order statistics problem. In product reliablity terms the problem is formulated more precisely as follows. A product contains N defects, where N ≥ 0 is unknown. Associated with the ith defect is a time Di at which this defect will be observed once the product is in operation. The product is placed into operation at time 0 and the operation of the product will be observed until some ﬁxed time T 0. Defects which are observed are assumed to 1 be immediate
