SEM Observation of Scalp Hair from People Who deficiency
of kidney-essence

Abstract
Objectives: To expound the theory of “the kidney manifests itself on the
hair” from the difference of human hairs’ microstructure among groups
who deficiency of kidney-essence, deficiency of kidney-YIN and
deficiency of blood hairs’ microstructure and provide reference for
judging prosperity and weakness of the kidney-essence as well as degree
of senescence in observation of TCM
Methods: Hair from 61 scalps of patients and from 25 scalps of normal
human was observed with SEM (JSE-6360), The diameter and space
between cuticles of each scalp were measured. The difference of diameter,
intervals between cuticles and microstructure of hair between different
sexes and among different groups are analyzed.
Results: There was no significant difference of diameter and space
between cuticles between different sexes. The difference of diameter
F=12.539 P0.01and intervals between cuticlesF=12.070 P0.01
among different groups were significant. The hair shafts of the group of
deficiency of kidney-essence were the shortest of all. From the aspect of

hairs’ microstructure, the arrangement of the normal people s’ cuticles are
regular and the interval between cuticles are equal.But there were debris
