Break, break, break, On thy cold grey stones, O Sea! And I would that my tongue could utter The thoughts that arise in me. 冲激,冲激,冲激 大海呀,冲激你灰冷的石岩! 但愿我的舌端能道出 我内心涌起的思念。 O well for the fishermans boy, That he shouts with his sister at play! O well for the sailor lad, That he sings in his boat on the bay! 若像那渔家儿童该多好, 他在和妹妹一起玩耍喊叫! 若像那青年水手该多好! 他在海湾里荡桨歌唱多美妙! And the stately ships go on To their haven under the hill; But O for the touch of a vanishd hand, And the sound of a voice that is still! 还有,一艘艘庄严的船舶 朝它们山下的港口驶进; 多么想得到那只消逝了的手的触摸, 还有那已不做声响的嗓音。 Break, break, break, At the foot of thy crags, O Sea! But the tender grace of a day that is dead Will never come back to me. 冲激,冲激,冲激, 大海呀,冲激你悬崖的脚下! 但那逝去的温文尔雅 将永远回不到我这里。 * * Break, Break, Break “冲激,冲激,冲激” By Alfred Tennyson 1.The author 2.The poem General introduction Poem Themes Tennyson with his wife Emily and his sons Hallam and Lionel Farringford – Lord Tennyson‘s residence on the Isle of Wight Statue of Lord Tennyson in the chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge Alfred Tennyson was one of the most popular poets of the Victorian age. He was born in Somersby, Lincolnshire, a rectors son and fourth of 12 children. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1827. After Wordsworths death in 1850, Tennyson was appointed to the position of Poet Laureate, which he held until his own death in 1892, by far the longest tenure of any laureate before or since. Queen Victoria was an ardent admirer of Tennysons work, and in 1884 created him Baron Tennyson who became the first to be raised to a British Peerage for his writing. He was succeeded as 2nd Baron Tennyson by his son, Hallam, who produced an authorised biography of his father in 1897, and was later the second Governor-General of Australia. He died on 6 October 1892 at Aldworth, aged 83 and was buried in the poets corner of Westminster Abbey. Break, Break, Break is a lyric poem by Alfred Lord Tennys
