* The content scanning engine is a scriptable filtering language. It uses an intuitive “if… then… else…” type of logic. It can scan virtually any parameter of a message – who it is from, who it is for, subject line, keywords in the message body, keywords in the attachments. It will recursively open zipped files and can read all major attachment types. The actions you can take upon a filter match are delete, archive, notify, deliver etc. The logic supports regular expression matching and nested logic so you can create very find grained rules. For example, you can write a filter that says if a message if for Tom and it has an attachment then delete it or don’t spam filter it. You can also pull in LDAP data into a filter. So if mail is destined for a user that is in the LDAP group called “engineering” then bypass spam filtering. You can also set up keyword searches and apply them by LDAP group. For example, if mail is coming from the LDAP group “engineering” and going to a competitor’s domain then scan for the word “confidential”. This is very powerful way to enforce corporate policies and protect intellectual property. * The content filtering engine provides an easy-to-use point-and-click interface to create custom content filtering rules for the company. In addition, the content filtering engine supports foreign character sets so that filters can be written for employees that don’t speak English. Messages founds with the content scanning engine can also be sent to IronPort’s system quarantine.
