Abstract The Core Competence is the collection of elements that determine the ongoing business and the trend to win the competition. It is the competitive advantages that cultivated through continuous optimization by putting its own characteristics into consideration so that other enterprises are not able to follow. The purpose of studying the Core Competence of commercial banks is to provide a reference to enhance the Core Competence of commercial banks through defining the system of elements that constitute the theory of Core Competence. Since the reform and opening up Chinas commercial banks have, through several stages of adjustment, formed a relatively complete system. With it comes the gradually furious competition. Since the opening up of Chinas financial industry in 2006, Chinas commercial banks are facing risks and domestic competition as well as competition from international best banking business. To survive and prosper among multiple pressures, China ’s commercial banks have to cultivate their own Core Competence. This paper is divided into the following sections. In the first part of the body, this paper made a list of both domestic and foreign core competitiveness theory on the basis of defining Core Competence of China’s commercial banks. In the second part, according an analysis on the history and the situation of the commercial banks today, the paper sum up some points that should pay special attention to when design the index system. In the third section, the paper established the competitiveness evaluation index system with reference of the theory both at home and abroad. In the fourth parts, the paper demonstrates the Core Competence in the competitiveness index evaluation system with the method of principal elements analysis.
