Aesthetics and/as Globalization: An Introduction 美學和/作為全球化︰介紹 ALE? ERJAVEC, Institute of Philosophy, SRC SASA, Ljubljana I Until approximately the middle of the previous century aesthetics – and by “aesthetics” I have in mind essentially western aesthetics – used to be primarily a discipline of philosophy which only in rare instances attempted to transcend its traditional academic confines. As philosophy of art and beauty it was firmly situated within the tradition of western thought. Aesthetics was slow to embrace alternative or opposing views (these ranging from the Frankfurt School to poststructuralism) which by their uncompromising criticism endangered its existence, disregarding its central notions, categories, and objectives. It was only during the late eighties that aesthetics commenced to regain its previous theoretical relevance and to generate a broader interest. It accomplished this task mainly by becoming the broad spectrum of academic and theoretical discourses with which we identify it today, when the concept consists of a cluster of different, sometimes even opposed meanings. Aesthetics has thus often become a notion designating various theoretic activities which are related to art, beauty, cognition, perception, and, increasingly, culture.
