The effective teacher of reading: Considering how to give instructions

Duffy-Hester(1999) perhaps stated it best when she noted the role the teacher played in helping children learn to read: “I am convinced that the teacher is more important and has a greater impact than any single, fixed reading program, method, or approach”. Our purpose in this article is to attempt to answer the crucial questions “What considerations should be known by teachers of reading? What principles should teachers of reading obey? What teaching strategies must teachers of reading be able to perform and how are these strategies effectively applied in teaching children to read?”

1.Introduction:If learning to read effectively is a journey toward ever-increasing ability to comprehend texts, then teachers are the tour guides. Recognition of the significant role of the teacher is not new. Early studies on effective teaching, however, yielded little specific information about exactly what teachers do in the classroom and how they do makes them effective. It may seem stereotypical to emphasize the obvious fact that teaching children to read is hard work and demands a great deal of effort, butthe ability to put forth effort in the classroom is characteristic of an effective teacher. However, it is not just effort alone. It is exactly on what the effort is focused and how this effort is expended that makes the difference. What follows is a brief review of the past 20 years of major investigations that specify what goes on in classrooms of teachers who promote student learning and growth. The purpose in this article is to attempt to answer several crucial questions “What considerations should teache
