Tess of the D’Urbervilles is his great work, which has a long influential power. He showed us advanced ideology of the times by this work and made a challenge to the old Victoria custom and system. The novel mainly tells how a beautiful and pure girl lost her virginity and describes her tragic life after being disgraced. In this thesis I will give a brief introduction about writer and his famous works at first in order to make the readers have a general knowledge of this novel. Then I will analyze family factors of Tess’s tragedy through her family background and description of her parents.Next,I will make a conclusion of social cause from three aspects: social background of the bourgeois invading,unfair social treatment between men and women and injustice legal system.Then,translating from the two main characters precious with Tess to the analyzation of Tess’s character weakness , we can make a conclusion about her factors by her character flaw. In the end, I think it can contribute to understanding fatalism and pessimism.
