The user repository option provided by the VMM component is the federated repositories option. As the name suggests, this option provides the ability to use multiple registries simultaneously together to build logically a single repository view. With the federated repositories option, there are four repository types that can be federated into the overall repository system. These include the following options: file-based, LDAP (or a sub-tree of an LDAP registry), database, or custom. With respect to the user management capabilities, an important goal of VMM is to provide a single model for user/organizational information. This means that the VMM provides a repository independent schema and API for managing user and groups. This is a nice feature because it allows customers to have a single view of their user/customer repositories. With the user management capabilities provided with VMM, you are allowed read and write access to the registries associated with the federated repositories. When multiple registries are configured for the federated repositories option, VMM takes care of performing a logical join of the entries across the multiple user registries. There is also the ability with VMM to support extending the properties associated with the user data by configuring a property extension repository.
