Eveline James Joyce James Joyce was born in Dublin, son of a talented but feckless (worthless and without purpose or plans for the future) father. The Joyce family was initially well off as Dublin merchants with bloodlines(血统) that connected them to old Irish nobility in the country. James father, John Joyce, was a fierce Irish Catholic patriot and his political and religious influences are most evident in Joyces two key works A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses. As a result of their steadily diminishing wealth and income, the Joyce family was repeatedly forced to move to more modest residences. John Joyce‘s habitual unemployment as well as his drinking and spending habits, made it difficult for the Joyce’s to retain their previous social standing（名望，身份，地位）. James Joyce : In his early youth he was very religious, but in his last year at college he began to reject his Catholic faith in favor of a literary mission that he saw as involving rebellion and exile.
