* VXI refines the VME specification for high performance instrumentation needs. The VXI specification includes multiple sections, VXI-0 through VXI-9, covering electrical, mechanical, communications protocols, cooling, EMI/RFI, ... * The VXIbus specification defines several elements, in addition to those borrowed from GPIB and VMEbus, that create an environment in which products from different vendors can coexist. * Again, the Slot 0 device is unique and has special requirements, as we discussed earlier. This is a key part of VXI system that you should pay extra attention to. This device is often called the Slot 0 module and usually provides other functionality as well. Slot 0 may hold a command module(E1406A), your computer-to-VXI interface module(E8491B or MXI-2) or an embedded computer. In VMEbus systems, all data transfer bus arbitration, bus timing, the system clock, and interrupt acknowledge drivers are located on the device in the leftmost mainframe slot. This is known as a Slot 1 device in VMEbus terminology. The VXIbus retains all of the low level backplane protocols of VMEbus. It also defines optional resources which may come from Slot 0. These include a 10 MHz ECL synchronization clock and a module identification bus. So, in a basic VXIbus system, the Slot 0 module must provide all the signals defined by VMEbus. In more advanced systems it may provide additional signals. It sources the 16 MHz SYSCLK and the 10 MHz precision CLK10 clock lines. Finally, it drives the MODID slot detection lines. * We have used the terms Device and Logical Address several times already without saying exactly what they mean. Lets clearly define them now as it will greatly aid our discussion about communications. A VXIbus device is simply an entity which occupies a Logical Address. Think of it as a plug-in module which may occupy one or more slots. Every VXIbus device must have a Logical Address that is between 0 and 255, and is unique from all other Logical Addres
