Abstract
Although learner strNegy training has already entered current language
pedagogN with special journal issues,conferences,and textbooks devoted to the
application of strategy training to language learning,there is still relatively little
research into the effects of strategy training on learners and the learning process,
especially in main—land China,a typical acquisition—poor environment Therefore,it is
the purpose ofthis study to investigate into the effects of strategy training On students.
This study focused on the investigation of the effects of training in five reading
strategies:predicting,guessing,sunamarizing,semantic mapping and identifying
cohesive devices and text structure,which were chosen based on the first phase of this
study:a survey into the reading strategies of the subjects.This study was
quasi-experimental in design and lasted for a whole semesten Two intact classes of 80
non—English majo,。freshmen took part in the study.One class was designated as
experimental group and the other as control group.Both汀oups took part in the Same
language program using the sgme textbook Meanwhile,the experimental group was
trained in those five strategies.
Pre。_test and post--test data were collected and compared to measure the effects
of training on students’comprehension and recall.Results of the study indicated that
reading strategy training is effective in improving sludents’performances on
comprehension and recall across all proficiency levels,with the high achievement
group benefited more from the training than the low achievement group The findings
of lhis study seem to endorse the notion of integrating strategy training into normal
language course cmziculunr
