Results of this study show that college students’silence in English language classroom is rather serious．Most students keep silent，and few students are willing to involve in classroom activities in English class．The main causes triggering this phenomenon are students’poor language proficiency(especially poor oral English)， the influence of affective factors(instrumental motivation，anxiety，nervousness and lack of confidence)and the influence of teachers’teaching mode factor (teacher—centered mode of teaching)．Besides，there are significant differences in college students’classroom silence between high proficiency level students and low proficiency level students．Low proficiency students are more silent and anxious than hi曲proficiency students． Based on the findings of the research，the researcher puts forward some pedagogical implications．Firstly，it is important to change teachers’role in English teaching．Teachers should play the role of a guider，a facilitator and an organizer rather than a lecturer who just pass knowledge in the textbook．Secondly，it is urgent to improve students’English proficiency．Teachers should encourage those hi曲 proficiency students to share their learning experience with their classmates and those lowproficiency students should learn the strong points from hi曲proficiency students． Thirdly，teachers must encourage students to nurture integrative motivation meanwhile making sure that the level of insmmaental motivation is right．Fourthly， teachers should adopt corresponding strategies to help students reduce their anxiety． Key words：college English classroom；students’silence；major reasons II 摘 要 随着中国的快速发展和对外交流的日益频繁，英语口语的重要性越来越显 著。然而，大多数大学生在英语课堂上保持沉默。这不仅会导致教师的情绪受挫， 也不利于大学生综合能力的发展。基于这些不利的影响，研究者认为有必要做进 一步的研究，帮助语言学习者和教学者全面了解大学生的英语课堂沉默现象。 本研究在综述国内外对于学生课堂沉默相关研究的基础上，通过问卷，访谈， 课堂观察以及英语水平测试的方式，探究了大学生英语课堂沉默现象。研究的调 查对象是江西师范大学2010级非英语专业的128名大二的学生。采用的问卷旨 在调查大学英语课堂沉默现状并且挖掘出导致学生课堂沉默的主要原因。基于以 上目的，本研究主要探究以下3个问题： 1．大学生在英语课堂上的沉默程度如何? 2．引发大学生英语课堂沉默的主要原因有哪些? 3．高、低水平的大学生在
