Studying English was like a taboo(禁忌) at that time. My father is a medical doctor. He starting teaching me the English alphabet(字母表) when I was 9. This brave act attracts girls and boys from our neighborhood to attend our session(学习课程) of reading the ABCs out loud. This, of course, sounded very strange to them. It soon got out that the Li family worship(崇拜) the “West” so much that they did not even speak Chinese at home. My father disregarded(不理睬) this and continued as our language teacher for years until he finally had to stop. The teaching methods were traditional. Father read and we read after, from new words to the text. Father was strict with us and would never dismiss us if what we read to him were not to his satisfaction. Those evenings of being taught with a rod(棒/竿) are still fresh in my mind. I was so dull one evening and failed to understand what he was explaining. Father shouted and grew angry.
