Unit 10 SPORTS The Spirit of Marathon Introduction: Marathon is the longest track and field event in the world. The name Marathon originated from Marathus(a city in Greece). The marathon was not an event of the ancient OLYMPIC games. It is a modern event that was first introduced in the Modern Olympic games of 1896 in Athens. The distance of the modern marathon was standardized as 26 miles 385 yards of 42.195 km. It can be divided into three forms, full, half and quarter Marathon.
