Unit 10 SPORTS The Spirit of Marathon Introduction: Marathon is the longest track and field event in the world. The name Marathon originated from Marathus(a city in Greece). The marathon was not an event of the ancient OLYMPIC games. It is a modern event that was first introduced in the Modern Olympic games of 1896 in Athens. The distance of the modern marathon was standardized as 26 miles 385 yards of 42.195 km. It can be divided into three forms, full, half and quarter Marathon. Full marathon is the most universal event. Drinking water and the wet sponge are provided between two drinks stations. In the game, players can take some water from the small table or a person standing at the curb. But it doesn’t mean that the water can be handed by everybody freely. Athletes can take water with them, and they can also require the place settings drinks. In addition, athletes can’t get water from anywhere else. The players can’t be admitted to take part in the game if they don’t match the physical condition of medical institutions.
