GPRS TO EDGE NETWORK EVOLUTION EDGE Modulation (1/3) GSM/GPRS uses GMSK modulation (Gaussian Modulated Shift Keying) and 4 Coding Schemes are defined in GPRS : CS1 to CS4. EDGE introduces a new modulation : 8PSK (8 Phase Shift Keying). 8PSK defines 8 states of the radio signal instead of 2 for GMSK. 3 bits can be coded with 8PSK instead of 1 for GMSK. ? 8PSK provides 3x the raw TS bit rate compared to GMSK (69.6kbps). EDGE Modulation (2/3) The MCSs are divided into different families A, B and C. Each family has a different basic unit of payload. When 4 payload units are transmitted (MCS-7, MCS-8 and MCS-9), these are split into two separate RLC blocks (i.e. with 2 different BSN). In this case, a Link Adaptation feature selects the best MCS that improves the overall throughputs. The Mean-BEP received from the MS and BTS is used to derive the MCS. BLER per MCS counters are available to monitor the Link Adaptation when active (i.e. when the backhaul is not the limiting factor) Link Adaptation is configurable through tables available on OMC-R. When backhaul resources are limited, the radio may not be the limiting factor. In such a situation, the MCS selected by the Link Adaptation is downgraded to fit the available backhaul bandwidth. Link Adpatation counters are not applicables in this cases. A specific counter is used to assess the missing bandwidth on the Abis. EDGE Link Adaptation Objectives Throughput highly depends on radio quality (distance from cell center and interferences).
