The Gold Rush (1848-1858) The Gold Rush is an important part of the Westward Expansion. In the early 19 century ,America began the west expansion .the territory of America soon expanded to the west coast of California .The unprecedented gold rush stimulated both the westward expansion and the development of the west of America . Before the California Gold rush ,gold was also discovered near Los Angeles and in southern California .Due To the behindhand economy ,the native Indians did not attach much importance to gold .And because of the limit of communication with other states, the news of the discovery of gold could not spread widely . While in California ,the Immigrants’ coming improved the economy, and they all saw the profit. That is why people from all over the world came here . The General Situation The Gold Rush began on January 24, 1848, when gold was discovered by James Marshall at Sutters Mill in Coloma, California. News of the discovery soon spread, resulting in many people coming to California from the rest of the United States and abroad. The General Situation The first people rushing to the gold fields, beginning in the spring of 1848, were the residents of California themselves—primarily agriculturally oriented Americans and Europeans living in Northern California, along with native Americans and some Californios. The effects of the Gold Rush San Francisco grew from a tiny hamlet to a boomtown, and roads, churches, schools and other towns were built throughout California. A system of laws and a government was created, leading to the admission of California as a state in 1850. The effects of the Gold Rush New methods of transportation developed as steamships came into regular service, and railroads were built.
