Standard English is the English spoken on the major national TV networks: NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, etc. In a Midwestern Minnesota to Michigan dialect known as “American standard English” [ASE] Standard English is also known as the “language of wider communication” [LWC] because of its widespread use in the media. What is Black English? Many African Americans speak and use a form of the English that is somewhat different from standard English. Every language system contains rules. The rules of Black English are functional to those who use them. These rules are systematic and are applied over and over again in the exactly the same way. More recently, Black English has been referred to as English used in a “casual register.” background The American blacks are called Afro-American because their ancestors came from Africa. The first blacks were transported as slaves to Virginia of North America in 1619.Blacks from different areas of Africa speaking different languages needed badly a common language to communicate with them. Isolated words they learned were unable for them to form grammatical sentences, so that some pidgin mingled with their national characteristics was created. With increasingly more numbers of blacks transported from Africa to North America, more and more blacks spoke such an English-based pidgin.
