20.Automatic and Semiautomatic Inspection The Magwerks Corporation specializes in buil-ding magnetic particle inspection MPI equipm-ent for inspecting ferromagnetic materials and locating flaws and discontinuities in casting, forgings,and machined parts. MPI is faster and more cost effective than X-ray inspection,and when properly applied to ferromagnetic parts,is more versatile than other NDT method used today. 20.Automatic and Semiautomatic Inspection Magwerks manufactures a full line of MPI machines,from small portables to complete automated systems. Some discontinuities that can appear on or near the surface of a part and can be detected by MT are listed in Table 7.2. P298 Table 7.2 23.Nonrelevant Indications Nonrelevant indications are MT indications produced by leakage flux fields that are independent of the service life of the object. Unmagnetized parts that come in contact with magnetized parts and parts that vary in hardness or heat treatment may produced random,loosely held, irregular indications that are nonrelevant. These indications are known asmagnetic writing. 23.Nonrelevant Indications Other nonrelevant indications may be formed at the edge of cold-worked areas or at the edge of welding lines. Nonrelevant indications can be identified by consistent patterns on identical parts,through knowledge of known internal fe
