Microsoft applies the same benchmarks to its own corporate infrastructure, focusing on five key capabilities to advance its IT infrastructure within the IO Model. For most organizations, their IT infrastructure can and should be their greatest strategic asset and business enabler. Unlocking that potential requires alignment between IT and the business as well as a mature infrastructure and an optimized balance between people, process and technology. Speaker Deck Guidance: Microsoft IT Environment The primary role of the Microsoft IT organization is to provide IT services ranging from user support and telecommunications management to server and network operations. Microsoft IT employs roughly 3,500 people worldwide, including full-time employees, contractors, and interns. Budgeting The challenge for Microsoft’s IT group is the same as for other enterprise IT organizations, balance IT growth with business needs. IT costs are “pooled” into groups that match the businesses, for example sales and marketing. In addition there are “shared” services, such as the network, that are allocated to all groups on a per headcount basis. Budget decisions are primarily driven in two ways. “Push” decisions are made by central IT and determine the scale, speed, cost/benefit and scope of technology deployments. The majority of IT infrastructure budget decisions fall into this category. This has the advantages of low administration overhead and great flexibility in the regions and among the core business as to their investment strategy. Optional IT client services, such as a loca
