We can see many flanks of Jack London in the real life： he admires success and struggles for it， but he is suspicious of the significance of success， and criticizes as well as yearns for material ascending brought by fame. His whole life is pursing， struggling， and he attains what he wanted before， such as money， fame and status， even his lover Ruth， but he isn’t happy at all， on the other hand， Martin abhors this world. Now we have a look into Martin’s tragedy. 　　1 The Tragedy of Love 　　Martin Eden is really a story of pursuing pure love. From the very beginning to the end， to get Ruth’s love has always been Martin’s only motive to struggle for getting wealth and stepping into the upper class. Martin felt in love Ruth as soon as he saw her at the first sight. After all he was only a poor sailor came from the bottom of the society， and Ruth， who was the daughter of a bourgeoisie family. But Martin didn’t give up， he decided to become a very famous writer to change his poor condition and get Ruth’s love in the end. It was the strong love for Ruth that encouraged Martin to struggle for life. 　　Martin was suffered， cheated and deceived by his love without consciousness. From then on， he just lived for love.
