BPD of Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire 【Abstract】Analyzing Blanche’s personality on the basis of BPD theory,this paper digs deep into the growing environment of the protagonist and the life experience of Williams,the playwright,and finds out the root causes of Blanche’s unique personality. 【Key words】BPD(borderline personality disorder); root cause; childhood trauma; homosexuality A Streetcar Named Desire is a powerful,one-act play of eleven scenes,providing an intense and dramatic account of a woman,Blanche Dubois’ struggle with effects of devastating loss and with her own fragile mental state. Unlike other people,Blanche has behaved in her unique way in the play. She tries her best to avoid the real world; she makes every effort to grasp a refuge,but can never keep a stable relationship with any other person; though arrogant and vain,she has no clear self identity,paying too much attention to her appearance and age instead; she indulges herself in alcohol and random sexual experiences; she stays in the bathroom too much,singing her beloved song,completely lost in her own paranoid ideation. All these behaviors adequately imply that Blanche is suffering from the borderline personality disorder. There are two reasons which might result into BPD,genetic factor and environmental factor which further includes childhood trauma and stressful maturational events during adolescence or adulthood. In the case of Blanche,stressful maturational events might be the main cause. Unexpectedly losing a relationship,often with somebody they initially idealized,often causes one to be overwhelmed with such feelings of despair and abandonment that is part of the syndromes of BPD. And this is exactly what has happened to Blanche. Sudden loss of her deeply cherished husband has left Blanche guilty and lonely forever. The vanishing of Belle Reve,the mansion in which she grows up,and deaths of her family members have taken everything away from her,depriving her of sense of security and
