A Comparative Study of Two Dictionaries Huo Xiaomei The dictionaries I’m going to compare is Longman Advanced American Dictionary (《朗文高阶英汉双解词典》)and Macmillan English-Chinese Dictionary for Advanced Learners（《麦克米伦英汉双解词典》）. The first reason I choose these two dictionaries as my objects of study is that they all belong to advanced learners’ dictionaries. They are parallel in nature: They are all designed for language learners. The second reason is that they are both publically recognized and authoritive dictionaries. The third reason is that they are both introduced ones by our Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. In addition, the prices of the two dictionaries are nearly the same: Macmillan English-Chinese Dictionary for Advanced Learners is 99.00 yuan, and Longman Advanced American Dictionary 98.80 yuan. Besides, their covers are all tinted with Chinese favor, for example, in their back covers, there are pieces of introducing information about their main features added by their introducers, such as the total number of entries, the main purpose of the dictionary, etc. In this article I will try to look upon them from the viewpoint of lexicographers or dictionary-compilors. From their differences and commonalities of macrostructure and microstructure, I will attemt to reveal the different principles which each of them follows.
