Design Program of a English-Chinese Learners’ Dictionary I Introduction It seems that there are numerous English-Chinese dictionaries in the book market. However, non-major college students often ask me to suggest them a practical dictionary. According to my own learning experience, I did and do recommend some so-called authoritative ones such as dictionaries from Longman family, Oxford family, Macmillan family, Collins family, etc. However, they say they had or have owned one, but to a great extent, it is not the kind they really want. As a English major, I like those dictionaries very much for they really helped me a lot in my phase of laying a relatively solid foundation. Thus, I was and am very curious about the non-majors’ reflection. I asked them the reasons and also kept them in my mind. As a postgraduate major in Translation and Dictionary Compilation as my major, I think it is a very good way to practice both theoretically and practically for future possible career. Half and a year’s study on the theories of dictionary compilation and practical compilation have really initiated my urge to design a practical bilingual dictionary for non-English majors. In the following parts, I will concretely introduce my concrete design program of a English-Chinese Learner’s Dictionary. The bilingual dictionary I intend to compile will be named as the English-Chinese Learners’ Dictionary, and it will include at least one billion entries. Therefore it is a medium-sized bilingual learner’s dictionary. The targeted users are mainly non-English majors in universities and colleges, of course, those who love English and study it on their own can also take it as their friend. Thus, much useful and detailed information they need most will be given. The vocabulary included in this dictionary are primarily chosen based on the criteria of《英语课程标准》，《大学英语教学大纲》，《四六级词汇》as well as《考研词汇》.
