Integral to the discussion of human pathogens and infectious diseases is the interaction between hosts and pathogens and the immune response which will be reviewed. In the first six weeks of this course we will cover important microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites) that cause human disease. Antimicrobial therapy for each group of pathogens will be presented as part of the Pharmacology thread. In weeks 6 and 7 we will introduce many pathological processes including disturbance of water and electrolyte, disturbance of acid-base balance, stress, fever, ischemia-reperfusion injury, hypoxia, blood coagulation and anticoagulation balance disorder and shock. In most weeks there will be 2 Problem-based learning sessions in each PBL case, covering material from the weeks topics. Doctoring and Clinical skills sessions will cover various aspects of the doctor-patient interaction and the physical exam.
