The Story ofEnergy.doc

The Story ofEnergy In the mid-18th century, after Englishman James Watt improved the steam engine, a series of technological innovations triggered production revolutions from manual labor to machines, known as the Industrial Revolution. Obviously, the Industrial Revolution broadened people’s vision and they came to get familiar with something called energy. Before the Industrial Revolution, the most common application of energy was fire. People used firewood to light a fire in a fireplace or stove, and most firewood was tree branches. And now we have mineral, nuclear physical, atmospheric circulation, and geographical energies. Even a primary school student now has more knowledge on natural energy and resources than the greatest alchemist or shaman before the Industrial Revolution. Such changes didn’t come out of nowhere. Human’s drills and excavators attack numerous mountains, plains, hills, and even the bottom of the sea, making the otherwise neat land become a “moth-eaten apple”. While human beings become more civilized, they become more savage to nature. Of course, maybe in that era it was inevitable. When only steam trains or even horses were available, the earth was too large for people to complete a full circuit of the globe. If someone did it, he would immediately become a hero. Comparatively human was so small. Such sense of bigness and smallness made human beings think that the resource was infinite or almost infinite, which was kind of gut instinct. Then people never had the worries about exhausting resources one day, and they were concerned about just how faster they collected resources. With the development of science and technology, when human beings look back one day, they find that these energy sources are not endless but almost exhausted. Take the fossil energy (coal, oil and natural gas) for example; it occupies the mainstream at present. Natural gas which is easier depleted is just available for at most dozens of years in the present
