Feedback Session on Assignment 2 of PPD: Translation
Description of the data
Problems
The learner either analyzed the topic under discussion from a theoretical point of view, or described the process of collecting the data, but failed to specify the data’s source, type and size, which should have been the focus of this section of Assignment 2.
For example:
The modern successful advertisement has “Five I’s” formula: “Idea”, “Immediate Impact”, “Information”, “Interest”, “Impulsion”. We should follow the formulas when we translate an English advertisement into Chinese. Generally speaking, advertisements can be divided into two types: public relation ads and commercial ads. The former tries to advocate reputation for a social group, whose purpose is to leave a favorable impression upon the potential audience. The other one leads to the act of purchasing the products or using the recommended service. Commercial ads are much more presented through mass media for the reason that manufacturers and companies are willing to spend a large sum of money to make a certain product known or to boost the image of a certain brand.

For example:
Since I decided to study the chemical science and technology English translation, I need to collect some translations. I realized that I would have to limit the scope further. I can manage to deal with the English-Chinese only. Various course-books on translation practice abound with examples. But they have to be used with reservation because those examples, more often than not, are sentences randomly taken from the original and its translations. I start with all kinds of textbooks on E-C translation practice where the problems of subject are discussed with examples. Such source, however, may not be sufficient.
