The Study of Media and Telecommunications Ecology Spring, 2010 (Department of Radio TV, IMICS) Prof. Liu, Yu-li Course Objectives This course fills the need for MA students to be familiar with the media and telecommunication environment and how to use them in addressing real-world media issues in a complex and ever-changing field. Specifically, ●students will become aware of current media and telecommunication issues and be familiar with global media and telecommunication ecology that can shed some light on domestic media and telecommunication industries; ●students will understand the technical, social, political, economic and legal context in which media and telecommunication emerge; ●students will learn how to apply international examples to address domestic management, production, and legal issues. Course Description This is a graduate seminar class in which media and telecommunication ecology ranging from global media and telecommunication development, management, production, market, and user behavior will be explored. The technical, economic, social, political and legal issues involved in the media and telecommunication industries will be examined. This course will also invite scholars from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China and Hong Kong to interact with the students online. The emphasis is on comparing Asian countries’ media and telecommunication ecology and discussing the controversial issues in the above-mentioned countries. Assessment Components Grading Participate in class discussions and online forums 20% Assignments (rotate one or two times) 40% Group projects or individual paper (choose one) 40% Course Policies You are expected to attend all classes. You are expected to be punctual to class. You are expected to submit assignments and project/paper on time. During class sessions, all hand phones are to be switched off and kept away from sight.
