International HIV/AIDS Alliance China Office November, 2009 Mobilizing Community to Confront the Challenge of Stigma Characterizing Stigma Stigma is a mark or sign of shame, disgrace or disapproval, of being shunned or rejected by others. Stigma involves (negative) judgments, stereotypes and generalizations. Populations most at risk for HIV/AIDS are typically stigmatized because of the association with sex and drug use. Common types of stigma are internalized by the communities and individuals they are applied to; they can stigmatize themselves. * Why Address Stigma?
