Political parties in Britain Introduction Political parties have a long history in Britain. but modern political parties have their origins in the wave of elactoral reform, starting in 1832. Before the 1830s, the Whigs and the Tories existed not as political parties but merely as groups of like-minded individuals within Parliment bounded by ideas, friendships and family ties. with electoral reform, however, came a need to organize-to mobilize to expending the electorate in support of ones party.
