We believe in delegating authority...and in sharing our knowledge, experience and technologies throughout the company.Anecdote 3M researcher Mark Reeves was looking for ways to use microstructured plastics to increase traction and prevent slippage on things like hammer handles and doorknobs. But, as he worked, his computer mouse kept slipping. So, Mark decided to try some of the microstructured material as a mouse pad. It worked so well, co-workers began asking Mark to make mouse pads for them too. One of those people was engineer Diwa Ratnam. Soon, Diwa and Mark were using their 15% “bootleg” time to turn Mark’s idea into a new 3M product. Diwa and Mark brought in an entire “skunkworks” team of marketers, financial experts, and even graphic designers, who contributed their time to the project as well. The idea grew and gained the support of the Consumer Stationery division.
