An Application of Conceptual Metaphor Theory to the Teaching of English Writing
概念隐喻理论在英语写作教学中的应用研究

Abstract: In this thesis, the researcher took an experiment on 76 subjects who were freshmen and from two natural classes of the Art Department in Chongqing Normal University Foreign Trade and Business College. The two classes were randomly chosen as the control class and the experimental class. The control class received the traditional way of teaching. And the experimental class received a seven-step teaching design with the application of conceptual metaphor theory with the purpose to answer the question as following: Can the students who have received the metaphorical kind of teaching improve their writing more effectively than the students who have not?
Key words: Metaphoric Competence; Teaching Design; English Writing;摘要:本文选取了来自于重庆师范大学涉外商贸学院艺术学院大一新生中两个自然班的学生(共76名)为研究对象,两个自然班被随机地分为了常规班和实验班。在常规班,笔者采用了传统的写作教学方法,而在实验班,笔者采用了将概念隐喻理论应用到英语写作中的七步教学方法,旨在回答在英语写作课堂中,概念隐喻理论的学习是否能更有效地提高学习者的写作水平。

I Introduction
In the teaching of English writing, the process-based and product-based approaches were widely used. And with the process-based and product-based approaches, even though there have been some improvements in the students’ writing, the improvements are not so prominent.
So the researcher makes a seven-step teaching design with the purpose to answer three research questions, based on an experimental study of 76 students from Chongqing Normal University Foreign Trade and Business College Art Department with the application of conceptual metaphor theory to the teaching of English writing.
II Literary Review
We can find that many researchers home and abroad have made a lot of contributions to this field. And a few of them are concerned about the application of conceptual metaphor theory in the teaching of English writing and have found that with the help of conceptual metaphor theory, the students can improve their writing
