Business (生意) In business English, business means the organized effort of individuals to produce and sell, for a profit, the goods and services that satisfy society’s needs. Generally business can mean buying or selling goods or services. That is the activity of making money by producing or buying and selling goods, or by providing services. When it is used in this meaning, it is uncountable. It can also be used to refer to an organization such a company, shop, or factory that produces or sells goods or provides a service. When it is used in this meaning, it is countable. Cultural Background B. Entrepreneur (企业家) A person who risks his or her time, effort, and money to start and operate a business is called an entrepreneur. Cultural Background C. Types of business Businesses are generally of three types. Manufacturing businesses (or manufacturers) are organized to process various materials into tangible goods, such as trucks or towels. Service businesses produce services, such as haircuts or legal advice. And some firms called middlemen are organized to buy the goods produced by manufacturers and then resell them.
