John Dryden (1688) three types of translation: metaphrase: word for word translation imitation: opposite to metaphrase,which is confined by neither word nor sense but represents a loose approximation of an authord’s emotion or passaion. Paraphrase: which expresses the thought or sense of the original without being enslaved by the words. Alexander Tytler (1790) Three laws of translation: That the translation should give a complete transcript of the ideas of the original work. That the style and manner of writing should be of the same charater with that of the original. That the translation should have all the ease of the original composition.
