Life Story Born on 21 October 1772 in Ottery St. Mary, Devonshire, England. Attended Jesus College, Cambridge from 1791 until 1794,left without a degree. In the spring of 1797, Coleridge met and began his long friendship with William Wordsworth. Falling under Wordsworths spell, Coleridges creative energies were awakened and he began to devote himself to poetry writing. Life Story In 1798, the two men published a joint volume of poetry, Lyrical Ballads, which became a landmark in English poetry. Coleridges poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, was included in the volume. Addicted to opium after 1800, a drug he used to ease the pain of rheumatism(风湿病), which gradually destroyed his health, happiness and poetic creativity. Life Story He began to give his famous series of lectures on literature and philosophy; the lectures on Shakespeare were particularly successful. Died in Highgate, London on 25 July 1834 of heart failure compounded by an unknown lung disorder Main Works The Rime of the Ancient Mariner 1798 Christabel 1816 Kubla Khan 1816 Biographia Literaria 1817 Position Coleridge was esteemed by some of his contemporaries and is generally recognized today as a lyrical poet and literary critic of the first rank. His poetic themes range from the supernatural to the domestic. His treatises, lectures, and compelling conversational powers made him one of the most influential English literary critics and philosophers of the 19th century. Kubla Khan OR, A VISION IN A DREAM.
