Life Story Born on 21 October 1772 in Ottery St. Mary, Devonshire, England. Attended Jesus College, Cambridge from 1791 until 1794,left without a degree. In the spring of 1797, Coleridge met and began his long friendship with William Wordsworth. Falling under Wordsworths spell, Coleridges creative energies were awakened and he began to devote himself to poetry writing. Life Story In 1798, the two men published a joint volume of poetry, Lyrical Ballads, which became a landmark in English poetry. Coleridges poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, was included in the volume. Addicted to opium after 1800, a drug he used to ease the pain of rheumatism(风湿病), which gradually destroyed his health, happiness and poetic creativity. Life Story He began to give his famous series of lectures on literature and philosophy; the lectures on Shakespeare were particularly successful. His poetic themes range from the supernatural to the domestic.
