When you heat a metal，it expands. 金属加热会膨胀。 When you cool a metal，it contracts. 金属受冷会收缩。 1) expand 动词，表示“扩大，增大，扩展，使…变大”，还可表示“伸展，伸开，张开，展开”。 e.g. (1) Metals expand when they are heated. 金属受热会膨胀。 (2) Our foreign trade has expanded greatly in recent years. 我们的对外贸易近年来有了很大发展。 (3) The petals of the flowers expanded in the sunshine. 花瓣在阳光下张开了。 2) 动词contract，表示“缩小，缩短”或“紧缩，收缩” e.g. (1) Metals contract as they get cooler. 金属遇冷收缩。 (2) ‘I will’ can be contracted to ‘ I’ll’ . I will可缩写为I’ll. (3) The tunnel contracts to a narrow passageway as you go deeper. 再往里走，隧道缩小成了一条狭窄的通道。 2. Steel is a mixture of iron and other substances. 钢是铁和其他物质的混合体。 1) mixture名词，作“混合，混合状态”讲时是不可数名词，作“混合的物体”讲时是可数名词，另外还可以表示化学上的“混合物”，此时只用单数形式。 e.g. (1) The city is a mixture of old and new buildings. 这个城市是个新旧建筑物的混合体。 (2) Air is a mixture，not a compound，of gases. 空气是多种气体的混合体，不是化合物。 2) 词汇扩展：mix 动词，有如下意思： a. “混合或掺和”，此时直接接名词或代词作宾语.mix sth. / mix sth. with … b. “能相混合；结合适当”，此时是不及物动词。 mix with … (1)The chemist mixed some medicine for me. 药剂师给我配了些药。 (2)Don’ t try to mix business with pleasure. 不要把娱乐和正事混在一起。 (3)Oil won’ t mix with water. 油和水不能混合。 3. conclusion 名词，意为“结论，决定” 1) 相关短语： a. reach / come to / draw a conclusion得出一个结论 e.g. What conclusions did you reach? 你们得出了什么结论? b. in conclusion 最后，作为结束。通常置于句首。 e.g. In conclusion，I’ d like to say how much I’ ve enjoyed staying here. 最后我想说我在这里过得非常愉快。 即境活用： ______, I’ d like to say thanks to
