　Social Quality in Taiwan Presenter: Yun-Tung Wang (Max) Assistant Professor in National Taiwan University Social Work Department Definition of social quality The definition of social quality was: the extent to which people are able to participate in the social and economic life of their communities under conditions which enhance their well-being and individual potential (Beck et al., 2001). Scheme of social quality Categories in Social Indicators 2005 in Taiwan In the “Social Indicators 2005”, the most recent publication of the volume, indicators are broken down into nine main categories: population, family, health, education and research, employment, income and expenditure, housing and living environment, public safety, and culture and leisure; and three auxiliary categories: transportation and communication, social security, and social participation. Differences between social indicators in Taiwan and social quality indicators in the European Union (EU) 1. Social indicators in Taiwan lack a concept and theory of the “quality” of the society. 2. Almost all social indicators in Taiwan are “objective” rather than “subjective”. However, these indicators do not measure and present subjective well-being and feeling which can be very important indicators of social quality.
