Unit 5 Words and how we use them Section One Step 1. Words to the teacher Throughout our program, close attention is paid to the understanding of the relationships between words and culture (natural environment, and living and lived experiences of the people who speak the language, etc. ). This unit highlights the relationship between words and living experiences. It creates a context within which students are encouraged to explore the question of how a language is associated with the culture in which the language has been growing. Step 2. Words and living experiences 1. Putting words in categories requires students to determine the relationship that exists among the words. The following words have been taken from the text, Snowstorms and Sundogs. Divide the students into groups. Provide each group with the groups of words. On the line above each group of words, the students write the word or phrase that explains the relationship among the four words. Encourage the students to guess and write a word for all the groups. 3. With the whole class, ask each group to read out their word and discuss which word is the most appropriate. 4. In groups or in pairs ask the students to read the text, Snowstorms and Sundogs. Review the vocabulary that was introduced in the first activity: writing a word or phrase that explains the relationship among four words. 5.
