Analysis of Cohesion in Chinese and English Introductions to Tourist Attractions 　　Abstract：With the theoretical basis of cohesion，the present research makes an attempt to analyze Chinese and English introductions to tourist attractions，with an aim to finding out the cohesive differences between Chinese and English introductions to tourist attractions. 　　Key Words：cohesion，introductions to tourist attractions 　　1.Introduction 　　As a mysterious oriental country enjoying a five-thousand-year history，China is increasingly attended by oversea tourists. However，some of the travel agencies failed to provide English introductions to tourist attractions，so they were unsuccessful in attracting the oversea customers. The author assumes that to make a contrastive analysis of the structures of English and Chinese introductions to tourist attractions based on the theory of cohesion would help promote the development of tourism industry in China. 　　2. Theoretic information of cohesion 　　Cohesion refers to the grammatical and lexical relationships among different elements of a text. According to Halliday（1976），cohesion is defined as the set of possibilities that exist in the language for making text hang together. The main patterns of cohesion are as follows. 　　Reference 　　Reference signifies a word or phrase that refers to another word or phrase used earlier in a text，or later in the text，or in which the text occurs for the item which is being referred to. 　　Conjunction 　　Conjunction refers to words such as ‘and’，‘but’，‘however’，‘finally’ that join phrases，clauses，or sections of a text in ways that express their logical-semantic relationship. 　　Substitution and Ellipsis 　　Substitution and ellipsis are used when “a speaker or writer wants to avoid the repetition of a lexical item and is able to draw on one of the grammatical resources of the language to replace the item”.（McCarthy，2002）. 　　Lexical Cohesion 　　Lexical cohesion means the cohesive effect achieved by
