Why do people need language? 5. Do you think that language is the only method of communication? Can you think of other methods of communication? Step2 Introduce different ways of communication (Page 21) 1. What is an emoticon? When do you usually use it? What does :-) mean? Do you know other emoticons? Please work in pairs and write down as many emoticons as you can. 2. What does the sign in the picture mean? Do you think the same sign means the same to people all over the world? Who needs to use sign language in their daily life? Have you ever uesed sign language? Is it useful for you to communicate with others? Background : Sign language for people who could not hear or speak was developed in the 18th century. The French Abbe Charles Michel Epee (1712-1789) studied the sign language which had grown up among such people over the centuries and organized it into a systematic language.
